Rector – Prof. Dr. Mahmut AYDIN

Our rector Prof. Dr. Mahmut Aydın who was born in Samsun in the district of 19 Mayıs has graduated from the Department of Theology at Ondokuz Mayıs University in 1990.  He then became a research assistant at the department of  Science of Philosophy and Religion in the field of History of Religions at OMU, Faculty of Theology in 1991. He completed his master’s degree in 1993 with a dissertation titled, “The Birth and Development of Ecclesiastical Law”. In May 1994, he was sent to England to start his Ph.D. in England by OMU. He completed his doctorate degree in the Centre For The Study Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations at the department of Theology at Birmingham University with a dissertation titled “Modern Western Christian Theological Understandings of Muslims Since the Second Vatican Council” in 1998 and he returned to Turkey. In April 1999, he was appointed as assistant professor to the Department of  Science of Philosophy and Religion in the field of History of Religions at OMU. In 2003, he received the title of associate professor and in 2009 the title of professor.  Between the years of 2008–2012 he was on the duty of a director at the Institue of Social Sciences at OMU and between 2012-2014 he was on the duty of Vice-Rector. During his doctorate education, at the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical Oriental Institute, he carried out a research for 3 years on the Islam and Muslimism perception of Vatikan. He participated in several international organizations as a guest speaker and he also gave lectures at Glasgow, Hamburg, and Trento Universities.

Prof. Dr. Mahmut Aydın who was appointed as constituent rector for our university on September 6, 2018, with the appreciation of our President, is also an internationally recognized scholar with his studies on Christianity, the religions and the intercultural relations, Muslim-Christian relations, religious pluralism, Islam and the other religions; and with the academic meetings, he participated.
